Overview
Age of Empires 2: The Age of Kings is the much anticipated sequel of Microsoft's Age of Empires. Age of Kings takes place after the fall of Rome. You must guide guide one of thirteen civilizations through 4 new ages. You start off in the Dark Age and progress through the Feudal Age, Castle Age, and Imperial Age. There are new units in this game as well as many significant improvements over Age of Empires. New campaigns are also included which are much better than the ones in the original. In these campaigns, you follow the rise of heroes and a heroine including William Wallace, Joan of Arc, Barbarossa, Saladin, and Genghis Kahn.
Overall the game is much improved over the original. Fortifications are very practical and difficult to crack. Formations are a great help in keeping units together. Campaign design is much better with much more involvement in the story. The game feels much more balanced as single unit type rushes no longer work as effectively especially when going up against fortified towns. The game simply is just a big improvement over its predecessor.
